Redefining the Creation of 3D Digital Models

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., August 3, 1999 - At SIGGRAPH '99 Geomagic, Inc. (booth #2311) will introduce a unique solution for creating 3D digital content that will save time, money, and increase the efficiency of the design process. This new approach to 3D design begins with data from any one of a variety of sources, including physical objects, and eliminates the tedious manual processes usually associated with creating high-quality digital models of complex or organic shapes.

At the heart of this solution are Geomagic's breakthrough products, Geomagic Wrap and Geomagic Shape. The power of the company's technology is that it automatically converts scan data gathered from a physical object or polygonal data created in other software packages to NURBS models. Automating this conversion can cut 3D content development time from weeks to hours, and results in high-quality designs that accurately reflect the intent of the industrial designer. Using Wrap and Shape simplifies the design process, increases throughput, and produces digital models that adhere to the stringent production standards required for manufacturing. These high-quality digital models are also employed for special effects, animation, game development, and electronic sales and marketing.

Geomagic frees industrial designers to create in whatever medium is most natural to them. If the creative process begins in a physical form such as clay or foam, that design can quickly and easily be digitized using a variety of scanning technologies and then converted to a high-quality NURBS model with Wrap and Shape. For computer-based artists, Geomagic is working closely with SensAble Technologies, Inc. (SIGGRAPH booth #1101) to ensure smooth interoperability between their FreeForm 3D modeling system and Geomagic's technology. Combining the technologies of the two companies opens exciting new avenues for 3D design on the desktop. Many design processes also include CAD, so Geomagic is working with Parametric Technology Corporation and other leading CAD vendors to provide the most efficient means of bringing complex organic shapes into their systems.

"The goal of Raindrop's products is to allow industrial designers and other users of 3D information to create and manipulate shapes in a natural, intuitive way," says Ping Fu, founder and CTO of Geomagic. "You make the shapes and we do the math."

About Geomagic

Geomagic (www.geomagic.com) is a global company dedicated to advancing and applying 3D technology for the benefit of humanity. Geomagic’s scanning and design software solutions are used to capture and model 3D content from physical objects, organically sculpt complex shapes, and prepare products for manufacturing. In addition, the company produces powerful 3D metrology and inspection software that verifies dimensional quality by comparing as-built products to master designs. Geomagic’s Sensable Phantom haptic devices simulate the sense of touch in a digital environment.

Geomagic’s software and hardware are utilized by world-class customers in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, consumer products, toys, collectibles, coindesign, jewelry, fine art, heritage restoration, research, education, mold making, entertainment, training and surgical simulation. In fact, some of the world’s leading companies and research organizationsuse Geomagic software, including Ford, BMW,Boeing, Harley DavidsonTimberland, Mattel/Fisher Price, Lego, Pratt & WhitneyNASA, Schneider Electronic, 3M, Danaher and Invisalign. Geomagic is based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., USA, with an office in Boston, subsidiaries in Europe and Asia, and channel partners worldwide.
