Geomagic's third Innovation Award in two years

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., January 3, 2000 - Computer Graphics Worldmagazine, a leading publication aimed at the visual computing industry, has announced that Geomagic Shape™ from Geomagic, Inc. has been awarded the magazine’s Innovation Award for 1999. The award represents a "clean sweep" for the company, whose Decimate and Wrap™ applications each received the 1998 award.

Geomagic Shape employs mathematically superior technology to quickly and easily create accurate three-dimensional (3D) computer models, and do it much faster than traditional solutions. These high-quality digital models are used to provide information for computer-controlled manufacturing devices. They are also employed for cinematic special effects, game development and animation, and have wide-ranging potential applications in medicine, dentistry, and the "mass customization" of consumer products.

In more technical terms, Geomagic Shape takes scanned data gathered from a physical object or polygonal data created in other software packages and converts the data to NURBS (non-uniform rational B-splines) models. The power of the Geomagic solution is its ability to allow both automated and user-directed workflow. Automation of repetitive tasks increases productivity and simplicity and can cut 3D content development time from weeks to hours. User-directed control adds flexibility and allows the operator to have precise command of the finished product, resulting in high-quality designs that accurately reflect the intent of the designer.

"There was a lot of activity in conversion of solids to NURBS in 1999," said Phil LoPiccolo, editor-in-chief of CGW. "We recognized several companies, and tried to distinguish among them. Geomagic Shape's ability to automatically transform polygons to NURBS was the feature that made it stand out, and will make it especially valuable to manufacturers."

"We’re very pleased to be recognized by Computer Graphics World," said Geomagic CEO Jon Fjeld, "especially for the second year in a row. We’re convinced that our products are the best in the world at what they do, but it’s always nice to receive outside validation, especially from a source such as CGW that evaluates and compares all of the products in the industry."

About Geomagic

Geomagic (www.geomagic.com) is a global company dedicated to advancing and applying 3D technology for the benefit of humanity. Geomagic’s scanning and design software solutions are used to capture and model 3D content from physical objects, organically sculpt complex shapes, and prepare products for manufacturing. In addition, the company produces powerful 3D metrology and inspection software that verifies dimensional quality by comparing as-built products to master designs. Geomagic’s Sensable Phantom haptic devices simulate the sense of touch in a digital environment.

Geomagic’s software and hardware are utilized by world-class customers in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, consumer products, toys, collectibles, coindesign, jewelry, fine art, heritage restoration, research, education, mold making, entertainment, training and surgical simulation. In fact, some of the world’s leading companies and research organizationsuse Geomagic software, including Ford, BMW,Boeing, Harley DavidsonTimberland, Mattel/Fisher Price, Lego, Pratt & WhitneyNASA, Schneider Electronic, 3M, Danaher and Invisalign. Geomagic is based in Research Triangle Park, N.C., USA, with an office in Boston, subsidiaries in Europe and Asia, and channel partners worldwide.
