RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., February 22, 2006- Geomagic (www.geomagic.com), a leading provider of digital shape sampling and processing (DSSP) software and services, announces support for Steintek's MobileScan3D automated scanner system. The new plugin provides real-time processing and visualization of physical objects as they are captured by the MobileScan3D scanning system.

The free plugin, available directly from Steintek (www.MobileScan3D.com) and Geomagic (www.geomagic.com), is fully integrated with Geomagic Qualify computer-aided inspection and Geomagic Studio digital reconstruction software.

“We are pleased that Steintek is using our agile platform to offer additional value to its MobileScan3D customers,” says Andrew Stein, vice president of marketing, product and business development for Geomagic. “This is an example of how Geomagic works with its optical measurement system partners to help users realize significant productivity gains from DSSP.”

“We are optimizing the production cycle time, minimizing the time the user needs to reverse-engineer a physical part or inspect an as-built part against its CAD model, and maximizing his gains by extending the processing speed and flexibility of the Steintek system,” says Eliana De Santis, Steintek president. “MobileScan3D users now have a much more comfortable, complete solution for their automated measurements.”

Specifically, the plugin enables real-time processing and graphics display, with automated alignment and creation of datums and features.

The MobileScan3D is an automated scanner system that offers full scanning or selected data-gathering with high resolution of 3µm and accuracy [+/-] 10µm without the need to interchange parts or interfere in the measurement process.

Real-Time Display & Filtering

The Steintek MobileScan3D system captures large areas at speed of 25,600 points per second with 10-micron accuracy or more than 50,000 points per second with 20-micron accuracy. The rotary axes allow an accurate sensor and object position that guarantees the overall system accuracy.

When an object is scanned, measurement data is immediately displayed on the screen as a regular ordered data set.

The plugin allows users in inspection applications to see exactly what has been scanned and how it has been scanned. Using the plugin, users can do "what-if" analyses to optimize and adjust filter options and immediately see results on scan data. Data doesn't have to be scanned over and over, which increases user productivity.

The MobileScan3D plugin for Geomagic software provides capabilities for real-time processing during scanning that include:

  • Automatic scan data filtering as scan data is being captured
  • Real-time volumetric area of interest (all data outside of this area is clipped)
  • All scans are in a single coordinate system, eliminating the need for manual registration and reducing post-scanning processing
  • Parameterized edge detection preserves sharp contours
  • Adjustable noise reduction smoothes the surface
  • Variable filter angle removes data not picked up accurately by the scanner and improves surface data quality.
