New Software Tools to Revolutionize Product Design and Production

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 29, 1999- Geomagic, Inc. today announced the release of Geomagic Shape v1.0 and version 3.0 of award-winning Geomagic Wrap. With the addition of Geomagic Shape to the company's product line, Geomagic offers the only complete solution for the automated creation of NURBS models from scan data or polygonal models.

The use of Shape and Wrap will have the most immediate impact in manufacturing, where precision, automation, and throughput really matter. Using Shape and Wrap will enable:

  • Improved Product Design - Many products today require freeform design. With Shape and Wrap maintaining design intent and satisfying engineering constraints is no longer a conflict.

  • Rapid Reverse Engineering - Use scan data of existing products or convert legacy polygonal models to serve as the reference model for new designs.

  • Automation - Dramatically reduce the product development timeline by eliminating the laborious process of manually creating NURB patches.

  • Higher Quality Production - Increase the efficiency and quality of production by manufacturing more products from digital models.

"Shape and Wrap automate the tedious and complex creation of NURBS models so the industrial designer is free to concentrate on great design," said Ping Fu, co-founder and CTO of Geomagic. "Companies now not only get better product designs, but can manufacture them much more efficiently."

Geomagic Shape v1.0 features:

  • Automatic character line detection
  • Automatic creation of a watertight NURBS patches from polygonal models
  • UV parameterization with global connectivity
  • Automatic preservation of shape topology
  • Interactive accuracy verification
  • Seamless integration with installed CAD system

Geomagic Wrap v3.0 features:

  • Automatic creation of polygonal models from point cloud data
  • Universal input for scan data
  • Extensive point editing operations
  • Flexible model editing tools
  • Interactive accuracy verification
  • Award-winning decimation feature
  • Wide variety of 3D format translation options
  • Dramatic performance improvements

Shape and Wrap run on Windows NT/95/98, and Silicon Graphics workstations. The applications are packaged together as Geomagic Studio or licensed separately.
