Digital Duplication™ solution for design and manufacturing combines automation with user control

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., January 14, 2000 - Geomagic, Inc. today announced Release 2.0 of its flagship product, Geomagic Studio. Geomagic software employs mathematically superior technology to quickly and easily create accurate three-dimensional (3D) computer models, and do it much faster than traditional solutions. These high-quality digital models are used for computer-aided design and manufacturing. They are also employed in cinematic special effects, game development and animation, and have wide-ranging potential applications in medicine, dentistry, and the "mass customization" of consumer products. Geomagic Studio offers users more control over design data while automating the most tedious and time-consuming aspects of creating a manufacturable model, making Digital Duplication™ - the process of automatically converting physical models into digital form for rapid surfacing, rapid reverse engineering and the creation of Digital Inventory™ - a reality.

In more technical terms, Geomagic Studio is the only software that automates the creation of non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) surfaces from point cloud and polygonal information, bringing flexibility, efficiency and cost savings to the product design and manufacturing process. Geomagic Studio users report reductions in production time of 10:1 or more compared to traditional solutions.

"In the past, it’s always been a very time-consuming, difficult and expensive task to get NURBS surfaces from scan data. There was no shortcut, until now." said David Bassett of ScanSite (www.scansite.com). "With Geomagic Studio, we’re more competitive because we’re able to take on reverse-engineering projects that just didn’t make sense for us before. Studio is easy to work with, creates watertight models and pays for itself very quickly."

"Our product development is focused on three tenets: simplicity, throughput and manufacturability," said Ping Fu, Geomagic CTO. "Even with a host of new features, Studio 2.0 is easy to use, drastically reduces the time it takes to get a design into production and produces an accurate, watertight model every time."

Highlights of Geomagic Studio 2.0 include:

  • New point processing features, including curvature and uniform sampling and noise reduction, that produce cleaner, more manageable models while preserving details.

  • New boundary processing that identifies and represents straight and curved edges, resulting in better surfaces with clean boundaries.

  • Intelligent, automated patch layout that gives user-directed control of the final NURBS surface without making the user responsible for correct topology, thus maintaining design intent.

  • Improved editing tools for polygons and NURBS that give the user the power to fine-tune the model and correct problems such as holes and undesirable surface features.

  • Merge patches functionality that allows multiple patches to be combined into one, simplifying the final NURBS output.

  • Mirror functionality for automated creation of a reflected duplicate image that cuts the time necessary to make mirrored objects.

  • Tolerance and continuity checks that give the user numerical information and confidence in surface quality.

  • Measure distance capability that provides dimension information of user selected regions.

  • Many additions to graphics, overall usability and performance improvements, including texture mapping, reflection map, model orientation and alignment, multi-view, spaceball support, and paintbrush drawing tools.

  • Support for additional scanners, making it easier for Studio users to share data within and across enterprises.

Geomagic Studio includes Geomagic Shape™, Geomagic Wrap™ and Geomagic Decimate. Each application can be used independently, and work together in an integrated interface to offer a complete solution for industrial design, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, tooling, and entertainment. 3D data created using Geomagic technology seamlessly integrates with software and hardware used in the manufacturing process and can be used for other downstream applications as well.

About Geomagic

Geomagic (www.geomagic.com) is a global company dedicated to advancing and applying 3D technology for the benefit of humanity. Geomagic’s scanning and design software solutions are used to capture and model 3D content from physical objects, organically sculpt complex shapes, and prepare products for manufacturing. In addition, the company produces powerful 3D metrology and inspection software that verifies dimensional quality by comparing as-built products to master designs. Geomagic’s Sensable Phantom haptic devices simulate the sense of touch in a digital environment.

Geomagic’s software and hardware are utilized by world-class customers in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, medical, consumer products, toys, collectibles, coindesign, jewelry, fine art, heritage restoration, research, education, mold making, entertainment, training and surgical simulation. In fact, some of the world’s leading companies and research organizationsuse Geomagic software, including Ford, BMW,Boeing, Harley DavidsonTimberland, Mattel/Fisher Price, Lego, Pratt & WhitneyNASA, Schneider Electronic, 3M, Danaher and Invisalign.
