Italian start-up Robonica recognized these urban-dwelling drawbacks and set about creating a simple, elegant device to bring these plant-growing pleasures to everyone.

    When start-up Robonica dreamed of developing a stylish, Italian designed hydroponic greenhouse for the home, they turned to 3D Systems to bring it to life.

  • Proposing the Optimum, Most Efficient Solution

    One of Robonica’s key considerations was to find a partner that understood their Italian roots and that could work closely with them to manufacture a locally produced product.

    Harnessing 3D Systems’ On Demand capabilities in Italy, we were able to offer a highly cost-effective solution to help bring their vision to fruition. Injection molding using aluminum tooling was chosen as the optimum manufacturing solution due to its robust yet cost-efficient nature. The aluminum tooling guarantees production of up to 35,000 pieces offering additional capacity beyond Robonica’s  expected production needs of approximately 5,000 pieces per year.

  • Design to Prototype to Production, Rapidly

    The time from receiving the initial request to the production of the full injection molded prototype was incredibly fast. Having received this request at the end of September, the first prototypes – made up of 17 different parts – were presented in eight weeks. 

    This is even more impressive when you consider that the design needed to be reviewed and optimized for manufacturing and assembly. We were able to co-design the product, define each material’s components – either Bayblend, polycarbonate or ABS – by simulating and testing them, before delivering a virtually market-ready piece in a little over two months.

    The product went to market under the brand name Linfa, and has proven to be a resounding success – transforming the homes and apartments of its owners the world over.
