3D SystemsSLA® technology is part of a new digital technique that is transforming the way busy dental practices are scanning and fabricating dental restorations.

A recent case study on the 3M ESPE Lava™ Chairside Oral Scanner (C.O.S.) explains how the C.O.S. captures 3D data with highly-accurate scans of patient teeth, which the dental labs use to create SLA® models for dental restorations such as crowns, inlays, onlays and bridges.

In the study by The Dental Advisor, the C.O.S. technique was preferred by the patients over traditional techniques. One doctor quoted that when asked which system the patient preferred, the scan was preferred over the impression 90% of the time. Some of the patient comments included:

  • "The scan is so much easier than the impression. I would rather have the scan any day in place of the regular impression."
  • "I don’t like the feeling of an impression tray when I bite down. It is uncomfortable."
  • "Loved it! Incredible! Nothing to it. This is exciting technology!"

Using the digital impression to create the SLA® model also proved to be more accurate as opposed to the traditional method.
